The Civil Conversations Project exist largely to enhance and inform conversations about race in America. Regardless of which side of the aisle you’re on you know for sure that race is a thing here in America that bites into our time, our money, our peace, and our never ending march towards a more perfect union.
It is our core belief that with better, more informed conversations instead of just the emotional and irritating kind we have all been privy to, and maybe even engaged in, together we might plant seeds that germinate, grow, and move that dial.
So along with how to have a challenging conversation comes how not to have a conversation. I meant to send this out a year and a half ago when famed interviewer and journalist Don Lemon interviewed Elon Musk and provided a spot-on example of how to not have a conversation on race. But as Steve Martin used to say, I-I-I-I-I-I forGOT! So here it is today, a year and a half later and still just as relevant.
It’s an hour and six minutes long, so maybe you’ll watch it, maybe you won’t. It’s almost as entertaining as it is appalling. I was going to comment on all the things that Don did wrong. Or maybe it was actually only a few things that he did spectacularly wrong. But then I decided to let you just watch it without preconditioning you. I would love to know what you think in the comments section below.
