For several days I’ve felt like I should write something about Tyre Nichols - a living, breathing, young Black man who was beaten to death by five Black law enforcement officers in Memphis. Tyre weighed 145 pounds. The combined weight of the officers who beat him to death was over a thousand. But I haven’t really known what to say. I tried to recruit a friend and CCP associate who has been involved in racial justice his entire life and is a smarter, deeper thinker than I. But like me, he didn’t know what to say. Was this even about race? And if so, how and to what extent?
Thanks much Rhea. Those are damned true words. Each of us MUST find our work and then we each must do it. I agree. Thanks again. And thanks for introducing me to Andre Lorde.
Thanks much Kitty. Yeah, this one is beyond complex. And I too hope that we one day - soon - are able to learn what in the world was going trough the minds of these five law enforcement officers. When this is thoroughly behind us, there's a good book to be written here trying to peel back the layers. My gut feel is that violent ad heartless incident is a reflection of America in some ways. We're a very complex country.
I'd have written sooner, but I just got out of 8 days paddling through the wilderness of the Everglades.
Thanks for commenting D. Policing in this country is deeply , deeply complex. At the ed of the day, it mirrors America., a deeply macho ad violent country. Stay tuned for more...
Is there really no other way for men/cops to demonstrate their power without beating the living shit out of a black man?!? Is there some complete lack of respect for your fellow man at every level of policing that says shit and brutality have to roll downhill?!?
Thanks for writing a post on this. I can't watch the video because it brings too much pain to me to watch violence - but I am glad that the evidence is available for people to see if they want. I don't understand how the police could have been color-blind or how they could have treated another black man so brutally given the history of injustice to black people. I hope that we are able to learn more about what was going on inside these men's heads so that we can make more effective change. I'm afraid there is a deep, sinister problem.
Words cannot describe what a terrible injustice has been done. Kudos to the parents who are urging Memphis to demonstrate peacefully - how hard must that be !! I refuse to watch the video but am glad it is uploaded as evidence to the world. Just hate to support ad revenue promoting it. In George Lucas's first movie - THX 1138 about a dystopian world, the public would watch police beating people up as entertainment on one of their video channels.
Thanks Andrew. And yeah, there was no way that I could watch another violent snuff flick either. I sleep poorly enough as it is.
