Wayne, thanks for putting the spotlight on Hegseth’s racism. My impression is the U.S. military has been significantly ahead of other institutions in America in addressing both racism and sexism. The military is also one of the most respected institutions in our society, especially with working class and rural people who are more likely to join the military. If you are a patriarchal white supremacist, how are you going to feel when one of the most highly respected institutions in America gives the lie to your racist and sexist creed. If white supremacists hope to force their beliefs on all Americans then a primary objective will be to root out ideals of justice and equality from such a respected institution. From that perspective Hegseth as Secretary of Defense has some logic. It’s a strong statement of the depravity of the Trump administration when a primary objective is destroying principles of justice and equality in the most powerful military on the planet.

Hi Greg, and thanks so much for your thoughtful comment. And yeah, I think your impression of today's U.S. Military is spot on. When I become president I'll reinstate the draft my first day in office. Everybody, and I mean everybody, would serve in some capacity. Of all the useful values they'd learn, high on the list is military service exposes everybody to people and ideas that they would not likely ever be exposed to. Rich and poor, Black and White, liberal and conservative.

Responding to a question by Rep. Mike Waltz about the appropriateness of a seminar at the United States Military Academy at West Point called “Understanding Whiteness and White Rage.“ General Miley's response was full of integrity and unconditional love of his country." I want to understand White rage. I’m White. And I want to understand it.” Then, tying the question to the January 6 insurrection, Miley asked: “What is it that caused thousands of people to assault this building and try to overturn the Constitution of the United States of America? What caused that? I want to find that out. I want to maintain an open mind here.”

Milley called it “offensive” that service members were being called quote, ‘woke’ or something else, because we’re studying some theories that are out there. I’ve read Mao Zedong. I’ve read Karl Marx. I’ve read Lenin. That doesn’t make me a communist. So what is wrong with understanding, having some situational understanding about the country for which we are here to defend?”

Trump's response? To suggest that General Miley should be executed. Hegseth should fit right in.
