Hey Kitty. I'm sorry I never responded and thanks for your insight. One of my oft-used expressions is, "Action speaks louder than words." That's really not entirely true. Words can be motivational. Martin Luther King, of course comes to mind as do Ted Talks. ..Nelson Mandela. But at some point in time, words have to translate into action. Coming up with a holiday with no legislation or action attached to it to me somewhat follows into the category of, just words. It's not unusual for people to say to me, "Well Wayne, this takes time you know.'" Yeah, I do know that. But 406 years since 1619? Does anybody really think it needs to take that long to have only gotten this far? So yeah… Again… Thanks for your comment.
I second Greg's wow. I'd love to see this published in every major paper...not that these exist with the prevalence of corporate control and political leaning, but your words have such resonance with what is the heartbreak and shame of our nation.
As terrible as our current political situation is, I'm hopeful it will finally create an awakening to begin to demolish the underpinnings of white supremacy and build a much more equitable society.
There's so much more to say. Praying for your hopes to make an impact in the consciousness of America.
Hi Deb, and you know what? That's not a bad idea. I know from experience that it's too late for this year - Juneteenth has come and gone. But I made a note to myself to send it out next year. The way opinion pieces work is you can only send it out to one organization at a time. You have to get turned down from one before you can send it to another. If one organization, let's say the Wall Street Journal, accepted it, but I'd already agreed to place it with the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal would never consider me again. But if I start early enough, I can send it out to several major organizations. one after another. I sort of have a contact with an opinion piece editor at the New York Times, so I'll start there. I really appreciate your suggestion and I really appreciate your long-term and continued support. It means the world.
Wow, this is a powerful and eloquent summary of the all the tasks before America if it is to become what it asserts it is but has never been. Complete these tasks and America, for the first time, would be truly great. Just a note, powerful does not equal great, an equivalence too many Americans believe.
Much appreciate it, Greg. Honestly, I try to be calm, levelheaded, motivational, and a good role model. But the truth is, I'm just tired of words and platitudes.
This is one of your best yet, Wayne. I appreciate hearing your vision of where we ought to be. Thank you for your insights.
