I hated this report. Because it makes me feel so ashamed . For a black American to feel this way and to leave their birth country because they "don't feel like a man" is a crushing defeat for what I expect our country to stand for. Ya, 404 years is a very long time. You say "the country and its citizenry aren’t serious about fixing the problem" That cant be right. A whole bunch of people in the USA are very smart. We have electric cars, Facebook, AI and a guy just got an eye transplant this week.It has to be something else. I can think of many reasons. But the one that I think we could start with that would really begin to help is RESPECT. [thank you Aretha!] Seriously, don't we try to teach that to our children as soon as they can understand the consequences? Just think, if any action toward another human had to have even a C- level of respect for who they are or what they said or did, just maybe all the cruelty and hatred would slow down and people would begin to TALK to each other and figure it out. I don't know. 404 years is a damn long time. I hope you two have a wonderful ,respectful life in your new country.
Thanks for participating in this community conversation Maynard. To be clear, he didn’t say he felt like a man in Ghana but not in the United States. He was just saying that in the United States he feels like a man who is being watched and judged and feared every time he goes out in public. Can never really let his guard down. And you’re right Maynard. It IS sad. I’m sad.
We developed a vaccine to a deadly virus in less than a year. John Kennedy said let’s go to the moon. Less than nine years later America was there. America can do anything it sets its mind to. If the country set its mind to ending our race thing, we would have become the country we proclaim to be probably after the Civil War.
It’s a real dichotomy. Half of White America hates racial inequity so much that we pretend it doesn’t exist which then makes it impossible to fix.
The other half recognizes the benefit of their privilege and has no intention of changing the status quo. My personal belief about what the Tea Party was so upset about…wanting to “Take our country back” was the dreaded year 2044…when white Americans become the minority.
Yeah, sad. I agree. We could be such a great county.
Well THAT was fast! 😎
