Let's try to be charitable and say that "reverse racism" is the sense that in certain situations, Black Americans are now a favored class to the detriment of other races (especially
White Americans). Clearly, we all would like to have a color blind society where race is not a factor in decisions such as hiring, admissions, etc. The idea that there is "reverse racism" that favors any racial group is seen as contrary to the goal of color blindness and to the teachings of, for example, Martin Luther King Jr. is his "content of their character" speech. Although he does not use the phase, John McWhorter recently wrote an opinion piece in the New York Times arguing that it is time to end race-based affirmative action. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/28/opinion/affirmative-action.html?searchResultPosition=1. "Let's try to be charitable and say that "reverse racism" is the sense that in certain situations, Black Americans are now a favored class to the detriment of other races (especially White Americans)." Ok, I'll go along with that so long as we add "erroneous" sense. And I'd also go along with "the sense that Black Americans are now a favored class" if we added "especially among white Americans who feel that their-long unchallenged standing is now being challenged and they feel resentful. "Reverse racism " is really just white people calling "foul" when they're not getting what they believe to be their birthright.
Yeah, I was in whole-hearted disagreement with John McWhorter on that one. with whom I am generally in agreement. I felt like he is actually living in an alternate reality. All of his concerns with giving race-based preference could be addressed while still holding on to race based points towards admission. Should poverty also be addressed as a separate thing? Absolutely. Maybe I'll be more supportive of him and all folks who call for an end to college level affirmative action when they simultaneously call for an end to college level legacy programs. I took note of Brett Kavanaugh's insistence that he got accepted at Yale purely through his own hard work. He somehow missed mentioning or maybe even understanding that he was a legacy student.
The single best indicator of how good a school a student is coming from is their zip code. Despite what John McWhorter seems to believe, those zip codes are populated by white folks.
I think it's important to note that racist white politicians grabbed onto Doctor King's 'color blind' message to advance legislation that in the interest of being "colorblind", didn't encompass the needs of the still then and now disadvantaged-because-of-race people of color. "Not encompassing the needs" is not neutral. It's a smoke screen. In the world we still live in, if institutions are not offering a hand to assist the climb up out of centuries of disadvantage, then they're providing a boot to kick folks back down. It's not color-blind, race-neutral.
